Independent Living Versus Assisted Living.
With the many options out there for your retirement, it can be confusing knowing what choice to make. Many senior housing communities have independent living, assisted living, and nursing home options. We want to provide you with some helpful definitions to navigate through these choices. Many people are misinterpreting their needs to Assisted Living versus Independent Living.
Independent Living
When do you want Independent Living? You are making this choice usually because you dream of spending your retirement in a community of peers, where you can enjoy ready access to a wide variety of social, cultural and fitness activities. Others love the idea of moving to a smaller home that is easy to care for, surrounded by similar senior residences. You may want to cook some meals, but you also may want the option of dining out without driving anywhere. The common denominator in both visions is self-sufficiency.
While you have to be relatively self-sufficient, Viljoya and other independent living facilities offer services and resources to make daily tasks easier. For example, they provide local transportation, social activities or interesting day trips, group meals, and housekeeping and linen services.
Good candidates for Independent Living:
- Are healthy and able to care for themselves
- Want to live independently
- Desire the security of this community
- Prefer to live among their peers
- Can communicate with doctors and caregivers by themselves, or with the help of family or friends, but without the help of trained, onsite staff
Assisted Living
When do you want Assisted Living? You make this choice when a medical care community is needed to assist with medicine management, dressing, bathing, restroom assistance, and other health needs you may have. Medical care varies from one community to the next. They also provide meals, transportation, housekeeping, and activities. Assisted living residents require a higher level of care than Independent Living.
At Viljoya, we will be happy to assist you with your decision. We work together with local assisted living facilities that may better fit your needs.
